Broadwater & McKinley Elementary Schools

CTA completed feasibility and planning studies for these historic Billings, MT, schools in 2009, followed by team members spending off-hours pounding the streets in support of the “YES for Kids” bond needed to fund the educational improvements.

The crux of the design for both facilities was finding the balance between history and efficiency, to preserve each school’s unique antiquity while implementing maximum sustainability and dynamicity. The solutions lay within the tenets of 21st Century Learning: floors anchored by commons areas, operating as breakout or mess-making spaces; and flexible furniture and fixtures creating abundant opportunity to cater learning spaces to the needs of teachers and students. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles were also integrated throughout the design, focusing on connections and openness, brightness, and transparency.
