A few years ago our now 17 year old announced at dinner that he was “way smarter than I was.” I asked him how he came to that conclusion. Because “I ask you questions and you don’t know the answers.” I began to re-think my use of the Socratic method at the dinner table. Sure I could answer the questions and impress my kids, but don’t I want them to develop the critical thinking skills they need to succeed in the world? In a world where “answers” can be found in a moment, is the Socratic Method still relevant? Have young learners become so reliant on the use of technology that they cannot pursue answers without popping onto the internet?
I await your insights.
