Training Wheels

Earlier this spring I had planned to move my son’s training wheels from his little bike to the next size up.  Training wheels are made only for the smaller bikes, resulting in a half -finished project of his smaller bike with only one training wheel.  As a slightly protective parent it seemed appropriate to make the transition to riding without training wheels one wheel at a time.  This morning as we rode to his arts and adventure camp I noticed that he was riding with the training wheel riding about an inch above the pavement– building confidence in his balance and only occasionally using the training wheel.  Seeing his confidence grow allowed me to dream of a future of cycling through Yellowstone, or around the streets of Missoula.  I provided just enough support for him to find his balance on his own.
